So many people have gravitated toward online shopping for a variety of reasons, but there is still an expectation of having local options available. Having vast local options, however, requires that we also show our local support to help these businesses thrive and succeed.
Most of us do not want to hear of local businesses closing or big boxes choosing to leave Grand Island. We want them here. We understand it saves us time and miles. We understand that the towns around us benefit similarly as well. We also understand that visitors appreciate the amenities, and we welcome them to spend their money here.
A longstanding campaign called “Shop Small Saturday” is designed to place emphasis on the importance of local small businesses and the role they play in the overall economic success of a community. Shop Small Saturday is always the last Saturday of November, so set your sights on the 30th this year.
Did you know that small local businesses generate $68 of local economic return for every $100 spent with them? Comparatively, $43 remains in our community when it is spent at a national chain. Local businesses also tend to support our local causes because they are well connected to our community.
Keep in mind also that local businesses are owned by your friends and neighbors—they help create our community vibe which attracts new residents and visitors. New entrepreneurs are more likely to invest and settle in communities that promote and support their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.
Whether big box or small business, when we choose to spend our hard-earned money locally, we are doing our part to keep our community full of options and brimming with vitality. With the predominance and convenience of online opportunities, however, it is often easier said than done.
As the holiday season approaches, challenge yourself to patronize the businesses right here in your own backyard. To help perpetuate the concept of Shop Small Saturday beyond November, a public Facebook group called “Shop Local, Grand Island” has been created. Find it, follow it, and help spread the local love on November 30 and all year round.
